Sorry Christopher - I was not in yesterday.

To confirm that I have instructed the Contractor to ensure that the face of the 3mm recessed joint is totally flush, finished with a small pointing trowel to ensure it is vertical and even faced with no joints or lines. As with all stock bricks the edges of the brick are slightly uneven and the 3mm will ensure no overspill onto the face of the bricks.

For our own purposes I have asked for a control panel to ensure it is done correctly.

Kind regards

Graham,

Please see below. Can you confirm that you will ensure that the pointing will be done as Catherine has suggested? If so, then I will try and write this up today.

Hi Chris

This change to the brickwork is fine with me.  In terms of the mortar, they need to ensure that the pointing does not have a weatherstruck appearance, with no grooves, etc, in the mortar, it being totally flush and slightly recessed back from the front surface of the bricks.

HI Catherine,

I think you only had an issue with the mortar, but they have now also changed the brick. Any comments?

Sorry Christopher - herewith the revised information

We are seeking to change the main facing brick to an Ibstock Chailey Stock brick with a self coloured mortar joint, 3mm square recessed.

The main reason for the change is that the original Hamsey mixed stock is consistently 5mm undersized in height which, when set against the red quoin brick, leaves a 15mm horizontal mortar joint when coursed correctly. This was accentuating the amount of self coloured mortar seen on each bed joint.

Graham / Emma,

I am just trying to establish where we are with the materials, which is the only outstanding application at the moment. The issue was the mortar and pointing, and you indicated below that the panel was to be constructed to show revisions. Has this been done?

I am about to change roles within the department and would like to wrap this up before this time next week if possible.

Christopher

Thank you for the update from the Conservation Officer

I am replying in Emma's absence today

Materials

In regard to the sample panel, we too had doubts about the pointing appearance and indeed the Client has raised concern in regard to natural coloured pointing which is exacerbated by the fact that the multi stock brick is generally undersized (against the red which has the correct face size) leaving a 15mm joint generally (rather than 10mm)

We have already asked the Contractor to build a further sample panel using both slight bucket handle and slightly recessed joint - and obtained a sample of a similar multi stock (Ibstock Chailey Stock Brick ref 4501) which generally has the correct size face. We are also considering light grey and dark grey mortar - it would be good to get the Conservation Officers comments on use?

To confirm that a lime mortar is specified (1:1:5 Cement/lime/sand) that provides the correct strength for the brickwork whilst offering a lime rich mix.

I append some photos of the new brick v the old and light grey/dark grey mortar strips set v the brick work for consideration

I think the way forward would be to get the new panel constructed and then get the Conservation Officers view on how we should proceed. And then we will formally submit the alternative brick v the application

MMA Application

Good news that there are no concerns

Kind regards

Hi Emma,

Please see the attached response from the conservation officer to the minor material amendment (MMA) and the approval of details. There are no concerns about the MMA, but some further work is requested on the approval of details.
